Supporting Mothers. Preventing Complications. Strengthening Communities.
Why This Program Matters
In Uganda, giving birth is only the beginning of the danger.
Approximately [X] mothers die for every 100,000 live births in Uganda and the majority of those deaths happen not during delivery, but in the days and weeks that follow. Postpartum haemorrhage, infection, and hypertensive complications are the leading causes. Most of them are preventable.
Yet most mothers in Uganda return home within hours of giving birth. There is no nurse to check on them the next day. No one will notice if bleeding has not slowed, or if infection is quietly setting in. No one asks whether the baby is feeding, or whether the mother herself is holding up.
The Mama Programme changes that. We come to them.

Who We Serve
Our team reaches out specifically to:
- Mothers who have recently delivered — by normal birth or caesarean section
- Teenage mothers, who often face greater medical risks and less family support
- Mothers from high-risk pregnancies: pre-eclampsia, anaemia, diabetes, or multiple births
- Mothers with limited access to health facilities due to distance, cost, or mobility

What We Aim to Achieve

Every home visit we make is guided by the same goals:
- Reduce preventable postpartum deaths and complications
- Detect warning signs early before they become emergencies
- Improve healing, breastfeeding outcomes, and newborn health
- Equip families with the knowledge and confidence to care for mothers and babies at home
- Strengthen Uganda’s community health system for postpartum care, an area that has long been underfunded and underserved
How to Access the Mama Program

“When I returned home after delivery, I did not know what was normal and what was dangerous. When the MUSAWO team came to visit me, they checked everything and answered every question. For the first time, I felt like someone was watching over me.”
