About Musawo

Who We Are

By connecting patients, healthcare workers, training institutions, clinics, pharmacies, employers, and technology, Musawo is creating an integrated platform that strengthens healthcare delivery while generating meaningful opportunities for healthcare professionals.

Musawo is a Luganda word that translates to “Health Worker.” The name reflects who we are and what we stand for—a collective of healthcare professionals and partners working together to improve the health and well-being of individuals, families, and communities.

Musawo was founded on the belief that quality healthcare should not be limited by distance, mobility, or overcrowded health facilities. We are committed to bringing healthcare closer to people by expanding access to professional medical services in homes, communities, workplaces, and healthcare facilities. Through our home healthcare model, patients can receive appropriate care, monitoring, and support in the comfort of their own homes while remaining connected to the wider healthcare system.

However, Musawo is more than a home healthcare organization. We are building a comprehensive healthcare ecosystem that addresses the entire patient journey and supports the development of a stronger healthcare workforce.

Our work spans multiple areas, including:

  1. Home Healthcare Services – Delivering professional healthcare services directly to patients in their homes.
  2. Healthcare Training and Education – Developing skilled healthcare workers through Musawo Training Center and continuous professional development programs.
  3. Physical and Mobile Clinics – Extending healthcare services to underserved communities through fixed and outreach health facilities.
  4. Pharmacy and Medical Supply Services – Improving access to medicines, medical equipment, and healthcare products.
  5. Healthcare Workforce Development – Creating employment opportunities, job placement pathways, and career advancement for healthcare professionals.
  6. Digital Health Solutions – Leveraging technology to improve healthcare delivery, patient management, and continuity of care.
  7. Community Health Programs – Promoting disease prevention, health education, and community empowerment initiatives.

MUSAWO exists because too many Ugandan families face an impossible choice: travel hours to reach a clinic, or go without care. We exist to remove that choice.

Through home visits, community programmes, a licensed health facility, and a training centre that is building Uganda’s next generation of health workers, MUSAWO and ADFA are bringing dignified, affordable healthcare to people where they live and in the communities where they belong.

Our Vision

A Uganda where every person regardless of where they live or what they earn can access dignified, affordable, and compassionate healthcare.

Our Mission

Musawo strengthens healthcare systems by bringing services closer to families through testing, treatment, and tracking while training providers to deliver quality, patient-centred, holistic care.

Our Journey

From a single graduate’s vision to a thriving healthcare organization – discover the milestones that shaped MUSAWO to date.

Core Values

1. Accountability

We are transparent and answerable — first to the communities we serve, and then to every partner and donor who trusts us with their support.

2. Compassion with Dignity

We treat every patient as a whole person. Not a case. Not a number. A person with a name, a family, and a life that matters.

3. Accessibility

Healthcare should reach everyone, regardless of where they live or what they earn. We go to people into homes, communities and the spaces the formal health system does not reach so that distance is never a reason to go without care.

4. Affordability

Quality care should never push a family into poverty. We work to ensure our services are within reach of the people who need them most and that no one is turned away because they cannot pay.

5. Community Spirit

We are not outsiders delivering services to Uganda’s communities. We are rooted in them rising with them, learning from them, and building something lasting together.

6. Excellence with Empathy

We hold ourselves to high clinical standards, but we never let excellence become cold. Every procedure, every home visit, every conversation is guided by a listening heart.
Our Origin Story:

Journey Behind MUSAWO

MUSAWO was born from one man’s journey through Uganda’s most pressing health realities.

Dr. Mathias Ssenyondo was delivered in a banana plantation in Maddu, Gomba District, brought into the world by his grandmother’s hands, under circumstances that left lasting marks on his body and an unshakeable purpose in his heart.

His father’s desperate plea during that birth: “pull the baby out to save the mother” became the seed of a lifelong commitment to helping others in their most vulnerable moments.

Despite poverty and significant obstacles, Mathias excelled. He advanced on bursaries and scholarships, supported by a community that refused to let his potential be extinguished.

After graduating from Mbarara University of Science and Technology in 2016, his work at Rubaga Hospital and later in Lungujja revealed what statistics alone can never fully capture the painful human distance between the families who need healthcare and the facilities meant to provide it.

MUSAWO and ADFA are his answer to that distance. And they are growing because thousands of families across Uganda are still waiting for healthcare to come to them.

A Model Built on Solidarity

MUSAWO sustains its free and subsidised community programmes through the income generated by its clinic and training services. Patients who pay for care at ADFA Medicare Services help fund home visits, maternal health support, and community outreach for families who cannot afford to pay.

It is a model built on solidarity: those with more, helping those with less.
